Question by Amy C: Can we get a pet conure if kids have food allergies?
My daughters have food allergies to peanuts, almonds, and pecans, and one of them has a contact allergy to wheat. If we got a pet conure, what could we feed it? I am assuming most (all?) bird pellets and food mixes contain these ingredients.

I would not take that chance. All seed mixtures have wheat. I have never heard of wheatless seed, try looking on line. Pellets may not contain wheat.
What do you think? Answer below!

A pet bird would not be a good pet for your family. You could probably avoid the nuts but wheat would be almost impossible in seed mixes and pellets, Have you considered tropical fish? or maybe something in the reptile group?
Birds need seed in there diet. An all seed diet is very unhealthy but they do need to eat it daily.
All pellets will have things like wheat, ground wheat, cracked wheat, wheat germ meal.
They also need vegetables and some fruits. Though, they cannot live off just fruits and vegetables.
Birds can easily get nutritional deficiencies, especially if not fed properly.
All of the pelleted bird foods that I am aware of have wheat in them. So those are out. You could, however, make your own seed mixture (safflower, millet, flax, sunflower, hemp) and supplement with fruits and veggies. This would take a bit of dedication on your part but I have a feeling you spend a lot of time on dietary needs anyway so what’s one more gonna add?! I would look into some bird forums online and you can probably get some good advice on where to buy bulk single seed and what mix to make. And you didn’t ask about this but what kind of Conure? Green cheeks and Maroon bellies are real sweethearts. Nandays, Sun, Jenday, Blue crowns can be awfully screamy. Conures are the airhorns of the parrot world
