What are a few quick allergy remedies?

Question by lilhawaiiangyrl: What are a few quick allergy remedies?
I get bad allergies during the spring and sometimes even in the summer. I take Alevert which is an allergy pill similar to Claritin (which I used to take until I switched about a year ago) everyday but recently I have felt that it hasn’t been doing much. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do for my allergies?

See your allergist and consider starting allergy shots.

How do your allergies affect you? Sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, all of the above. Blow your nose frequently, get some good otc eyedrops, drink lots and lots and lots of water. Wash your face with warm water and soap at least 2 times a day, more if possible and lay down with a warm wet rag over your eyes, not hot, then when it cools off, go put cold water on the cloth and lay down again. All of these work. I have had allergies all my life all year round, I am allergic to grass, everykind there is and spring is my worst. I have to switch allergy meds every 2 years because my body becomes immune to it. Good luck

Zyrtec is the best i’ve ever used and it usually doesn’t make me drowsy at all. Plus if you’re like me and your eyes get itchy or soar ever… it really helps to put a washcloth thats wet with cold water over your eyes. it really helps sooth them!

  5. traveller365 says:

Alavert if it works, other over the counter products that work for you without over using them because over use of these and most meds can lead to symptoms similar to the once you took them to avoid, not to mention countless other problems. The advice someone gave earlier is good, pills and benadryl/ cough/cold medicine helps but best thing you can do is
avoid allergens, clean living/ work conditions, good hydration, good source of vitamin c and other essential vitamins e.t.c. if this doesnt help, see an allergy specilist who can try and i.d the offending allergen and try and desensitize you to it

Thanks for allowing me a chance to answer your question.
I am a pharmacist with 2 doctorates and 31 years of experience. Many of us suffer from allergies like you.
Claritin, Alavert, and Allegra (Fexofenadine) are allergy medicines that cause 0% drowsiness. However when the going gets tough they DO NOT WORK for many people.
There are other antihistamines that are more effective but cause more drowsiness. Zyrtec is a prescription drug that is more effective and causes 4 people out of 100 to get drowsy. It also is expensive. Without insurance it is $ 70.00
a month. I am a consumerist. I want the best value for the money. I take Chlorpheniramine 4mg which is an over the counter product. It was prescription in the 1960s. This medicine can cause about 10% of people over 12
to get drowsy. In my experience this is often small and
skinny women 4’11″ to 5’2″ weighing upto 110 lbs. They can take 1/2 tablet and usually do fine. The brand name for this product is Chlor-Trimeton. We sell this product in my pharmacy 100 tablets retail for $ 1.51 and a bottle of 1000
retail for $ 8.50. A bottle of 1000 lasts me and my daughter
    3&1/2 to 4&1/2 years. Imagine I pay only $ 8.00 and many
pay $ 70.00/month for Brand name Clarinex (similar to Claritin), Allegra 180mg or Zyrtec. A more effective medicine that Chlorpheniramine is Diphenhydramine 25mg.
The brand name for this is Benadryl. This is the BEST
over the counter antihistamine and is especially good for
insect bites where there is no impairment in breathing or
allergic skin rashes. A side effect of diphenhydramine is
drowsiness. At least 40% of people taking it get drowsy. (In the hospital it is used as a non-addicting sleep aid) In fact
the popular otc sleep aid Tylenol PM is nothing more than
Tylenol + Diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine is in expensive. You can find it retailing from $ 1.50 to $ 3.69
for 24 tablets or capsules. We sell 100 for $ 3.00.
One final note: older men often suffer from prostate enlargement resulting in a weak urine stream. Antihistamines can make urination more difficult in these cases. Use antihistamines cautiously on very hot days and be well hydrated (GatorAde or drink lots of water) to avoid
heat stroke. To be informed is to be prepared.

visit your doctor if the drugstore meds don’t work

First thing you have to do is see a doctor, preferrably an allergologist to help you identify what you are allergic to and probably prescribe you better medications. Unfortunately the best way to prevent allergic attacks is to avoid what is causing the allergy.

I have allergic rhinitis. When I was still a kid, the attacks were so severe that my eyes would get so itchy, tears would start flowing continuously and I would have a very congested nose when ever I go out of the house. Thank God I have out grown this problem. However, whenever I do have an attack, I take fexofenadine (Allegra) and this works for me. It get rids of the nasal congestion in 15-20min and everything else stops and I do not feel drowsy. Also, sometimes I take 2 500mg of Comtrex and this also helps.
